A simple way to remember safe babywearing is with the T.I.C.K.S. Rule—a widely recognized guideline designed to help parents position their baby correctly and safely in any type of carrier or wrap.
T.I.C.K.S. stands for:
-
-
- Tight – Your baby should be held snug against your body to prevent slumping, with no loose fabric or slack. A secure hold also supports your back and shoulders.
- In view at all times – You should always be able to see your baby’s face without needing to move or open fabric.
- Close enough to kiss – Baby should be high enough on your chest that you can easily tilt your head down and kiss the top of their head.
- Keep chin off chest – Your baby’s chin should never be pressed into their chest, as this can restrict breathing. Ensure there’s at least a finger’s width of space under their chin.
- Supported back – Baby’s back should be naturally curved in a “C” shape, with their tummy and chest resting against your body. Their back should be well supported by the carrier or wrap.

1. Choose an age-appropriate carrier
Not all carriers are safe for newborns. Look for carriers that support newborn positioning, or use a wrap designed specifically for infants. Some structured carriers require a newborn insert or have weight minimums.

Your baby’s legs should be in an “M” shape—with knees higher than their bum and legs spread naturally around your torso. This supports healthy hip development and reduces the risk of hip dysplasia.
3. Dress baby appropriately
Babywearing keeps your little one warm, thanks to your shared body heat. In cooler months, dress your baby in breathable layers and be mindful of overheating in warmer weather. Always cover exposed skin and protect against sun, wind, or cold as needed.

While babywearing is perfect for gentle movement—walks, housework, or errands—avoid activities that could pose a risk. Don’t bend at the waist (bend at the knees instead), and skip cooking, cycling, or any activity with sharp, hot, or unstable elements.
5. Regularly check your carrier
Always inspect your carrier or wrap before use. Look for any wear and tear, loose stitching, or broken buckles, especially if you’ve had it for a while or use it often.
