At West Coast Kids, we’re here to help you navigate this essential part of your parenting journey. Car Seat Safety Starts with the Right Fit

Car seats are not one-size-fits-all. The right seat for your child depends on their age, weight, height, and developmental stage — and it needs to meet both manufacturer guidelines and local laws. From rear-facing infant seats to forward-facing and booster options, it’s important to choose a seat that fits your child now and can grow with them over time.

      • Read the manuals: Start by reading both your car seat manual and your vehicle manual — they’ll guide you on proper installation and harness use.
      • Check the fit for your vehicle: Not all car seats are compatible with every vehicle. Check dimensions and fit to ensure the seat works with your specific car.
      • Balance budget and safety: Choose a seat that fits your budget without compromising on safety — every car seat we carry at West Coast Kids meets or exceeds strict safety standards.
      • Choose ease of use: Make sure it’s a seat you can use correctly every time. Look for features like clear labels, built-in lock-offs, and level indicators to simplify installation and ensure consistency.
NOTE: Even the best car seat can’t protect your child if it’s not installed and used correctly. A Child Passenger Safety Technician (CPST) can inspect your installation, answer questions, and help ensure every ride is a safe one.

At West Coast Kids, a certified CPST is available at every location to help you install your car seat safely and confidently. Whether you're setting up a seat for the first time or transitioning to a new stage, there are trusted resources and expert support available to guide you every step of the way.

Rear-Facing Car Seats: Stay Rear-Facing as Long as Possible

Infants and young children should remain rear-facing until at least age 2 and 10 kg (22 lb) — but that’s just the minimum. The safest approach is to keep your child rear-facing as long as their seat allows, often until age 2, 3, or even 4.

Why? Because rear-facing car seats provide the best protection for a child’s head, neck, and spine in a crash. Don’t rush through the stages — slower is safer when it comes to car seat transitions.

Tips for Rear-Facing Safety:

      • ✔️Follow your car seat’s height and weight limits for rear-facing.
      • ✔️Read the manual to learn how to adjust the harness as your child grows.
      • ✔️Legs touching the back seat? Totally normal — and safe
      • ✔️Consult a Child Passenger Safety Technician online or visit West Coast Kids
Keep your child rear-facing until they outgrow the seat by height, weight, and fit — and give them the safest ride, every time.

When Is the Best Time to Switch Car Seat Stages?

The 4 Stages of Child Car Seat Use

Switching car seat stages too early is one of the most common safety mistakes parents make. The key is to maximize each stage based on your child’s age, weight, height, and maturity — not just their age alone.

Understanding the four stages of car seat use helps ensure your child stays protected at every step.

Stage 1: Rear-Facing Car Seat

      • For newborns, infant stages and toddler stages, providing the best protection for a baby’s head, neck, and spine
      • Use until your child reaches the maximum height/weight for rear-facing (some seats go up to 50 lbs)

Stage 2: Forward-Facing Car Seat

      • For toddlers and preschoolers who have outgrown rear-facing
      • Use a forward-facing seat with a 5-point harness
      • Keep your child in this stage as long as possible, up to 65 lbs or when they reach the height limit

      • For toddlers and preschoolers who have outgrown rear-facing
      • Use a forward-facing seat with a 5-point harness
      • Keep your child in this stage as long as possible, up to 65 lbs or when they reach the height limit
Stage 3: Booster Seat

      • For school-aged children who have outgrown the forward-facing harness, are at least 40lbs, and are mature enough to sit still the whole drive
      • Position the seat belt correctly across the child’s chest and hips
      • Use until your child can get a safe fit with a seat belt alone (usually around 4'9" tall and between 9–12 years old)

Stage 4: Seat Belt Alone

      • Only for children who can sit back against the seat with knees bent over the edge, and the seat belt sits low on the hips and across the shoulder
      • Even then, children should ride in the back seat until at least age 13

It’s always safer to delay the transition between stages rather than rush it. The longer your child stays in a more protective stage (like rear-facing or harnessed), the safer they are in the event of a crash.

At West Coast Kids, we believe education and support are key to safer rides. Our team of trained professionals are here to help you choose the right seat and make sure it's installed correctly. Whether you’re a first-time parent or upgrading for your growing child, we have a wide selection of top-rated car seats and the knowledge to support you every step of the way.
