Skip Hop Potty Training Essentials

Every parent is excited to ditch the diapers and get into the potty-training stage but what exactly is potty training and when should you start? Potty training, or toilet training, is a major milestone in every child’s life where they will learn to transition from using diapers to being able to know their body’s signals for toilet use. There is no rush on potty training, every child hits their milestones at a different time. Some children show signs of being ready to potty train between the age of 18-24 months and some might show signs around the age of 3. Here are some examples that your child might show to let you know they are ready for that next step:

  1. Pulling at a wet or soiled diaper to signal you for a change.
  2. You might notice you aren’t changing their diapers as frequently as you would, or your child might be waking up with dry diapers more often.
  3. Verbally letting you know they are about to, are going, or just have gone in their diaper.
  4. Showing interest in others using the toilet or, copying their behavior.

Potty training is a complex process with many different methods of approach. Each child learns differently so there isn’t a set method on how to teach this necessary skill. Once you know your child is ready to go, before you introduce them to the potty it’s a great idea to let them get familiar with the idea of it. To help aid your little one into the transition of potty training, try to involve them in the process of choosing their first potty. You might even go through different types before you find the one that’s best for you. The Skip Hop brand has a great range of potty-training systems to best support your child’s needs.
