From the moment we find out we’re expecting, we begin to plan where our littles will safely spend their nights. The planning can be so fun, picking a theme or colour palette and accessories, as you spend months preparing for their arrival.
For us, it started with a beautiful crib, and the key feature we were looking for was additional storage. We found a stunning white crib with brass accents and knew it would be the perfect piece to kick off this space. Our crib is an older style from West Coast Kids and had a trundle drawer perfect for storing extra diapers, wipes, and extra clothes.
Similar cribs with storage are the BABYLETTO Bento 3-in-1 Storage Crib, the GRACO Hadley 4-in-1 Convertible Crib w/ Drawer, and the DAVINCI Colby 4-in-1 Convertible Crib w/ Trundle.
In those first years, you spend so much time in that room, so it’s important that YOU like it, and I loved how bright and calming it was. The room itself had limited storage, so when we moved into our new home in 2021, it was exciting to think about a fresh space for a growing child with interests, preferences, and opinions, that had a large organized closet.

I wanted my son to participate in choosing items for his new room but knew that I would need to be strategic in guiding him with options, to ensure both of our specific aesthetics were aligned.
A Few Tricks

- Start the search online, by yourself, and gather a few inspirations or pieces you like that they can pick from, like two-bed frames you approve of, then ask them for their opinions. We started at Westcoastkids.ca, Pinterest, and Instagram
- Keep options simple. Do you like Blue or Brown? Do you like animals, rainbows, or sports?
- Remember, anything that you don’t approve of can easily be unavailable
- If there are any meltdowns or disagreements move on and revisit another day
- Plan it over a few days or weeks, so your child has time to prepare and build excitement for the change
- Go slow, transition a few smaller pieces so they can get comfortable with new things
The Tone of the Room

The tone of the room was set as we customized a bedframe with Canadian furniture manufacturers Monte Design. Their furniture is handcrafted and sustainably made and designed in Canada, using the highest quality materials, and are proudly GREENGUARD Gold Certified - Certified Nontoxic.
Monte Design’s newest bed is called Luna, which means “moon” and is perfectly arched to invoke a sense of calm. Available in both Twin or Full bed frames, with or without a trundle (we love a trundle, ours is currently being used for storage), 8 different fabric options in over 30 stunning colours, we were able to create a timeless piece of furniture that will suit a growing child’s changing preferences.
To ensure that the bookshelves wouldn’t compete with each other for focus, we kept one simple, allowing the other one, a vintage brass, and glass piece to be highlighted. Another winning duo is the Babyletto Tally Bookcase, perfect for a collection of literary favorites, and the showstopping Babyletto Dottie Bookcase which can be used for decor, storage, and more fun things. Another strategy for this would be to have the two shelves coordinated, like the stunning Mini Library collection by Oeuf.
Storage Solutions

Storage solutions are important for any bedroom to ensure things stay organized and tidy. For our space, we opted for two bookshelves, one to host the library of books, and one to display styled trinkets, toys, and plants.
Bins, baskets, hampers, and crates are also key to teaching tidying-up skills to small children, allowing them to clean up their own toys and put away their dirty laundry, giving them independence within their space.
The collection of whimsical prints and playful pom poms storage solutions from Canadian-based, female-founded brand Pehr, can fit in any bedroom or playroom.
Modern and made from 60% recycled plastic, 3 Sprouts added aesthetic and trendy crates that fold away flat and can be used anywhere in the nursery, home, car, or even outside, to their adorable assortment of hampers, bins, toy chests, and book racks.
Having a place to put everything teaches toddlers organization skills and provides them with a calming space to grow, play and rest.
Personality Counts

Lastly, adding new touches to their personality makes the space feel like their own. Most of our family and friends are artistically gifted, so the room is filled with handmade accents. We love what custom and one-of-a-kind art does to a space.
The custom nursery sign collection, available at West Coast Kids, is such a great way of creating something special for your child that will last them for years. A neon name sign can be amazing in a nursery or kids' room, and still awesome when they are teenagers, in their twenties, and in first apartments.
Engaging your kids in the transition from nursery to the toddler room can seem like a daunting task, but creating a special space for them to grow and dream in allows them to feel safe exploring the world around them.
